CHERRY LODGE CANCER CARE

Cherry Lodge Cancer Care is a charity committed to improving the quality of life for those living with cancer, their carers and families

On a lovely sunny June day, a group of around 30 members, therapists and staff enjoyed what the Milly Days brochure describes as ‘A Special Day of Joy and Happiness’ on the banks of the Thames.

Milly Days are sponsored days at a wonderful riverside property at Bourne End in Bucks.

With Fiona at the front of the coach, microphone in hand, we left Cherry Lodge at 10 am (having first loaded our very splendid lunch, supplied by Coffee Bean in the Spires). After approximately an hour’s drive, we arrived at our destination, where we were welcomed with tea, coffee or juice and biscuits and a description of what was available for us during the day.

There were walks, boat rides, swimming in a heated outdoor pool, lawn croquet, tennis or simply relaxing in very beautiful surroundings beside the river doing nothing. It all sounded most appealing. The boat ride accommodated up to eight people at a time and many took advantage of these trips, which kept John, the boat owner, busy all day. Having a chance to ‘drive’ the boat was an extra incentive for some of us.

After lunch and a suitable period of digestion, a number of us went swimming. Fiona was not only the first into the pool – but possibly the only one to use the slide! The water was lovely and warm, and swimming ‘cossies’ were very thoughtfully provided for anyone who hadn’t thought of bringing their own.

Our hosts were extremely friendly, welcoming, helpful and sociable, and they sat and chatted with as many of us as possible. Nothing was too much trouble and anything they could do to give us a perfect day was done.

The sun shone all day, and we all had a terrific time. The hours passed far too quickly. The much anticipated strawberries and cream arrived, and very soon after that it was 4 pm and time for our departure. After a good return journey we arrived back at Cherry Lodge at around 5 pm.

A very big thank you to Gina and Emma and everyone else involved in arranging this amazing outing. It really was a ‘day of joy and happiness’ and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves – in short, an event we will remember for a very long time.

(Thank you also to Mark for his description of this very special day.)
